Opening Doors
A special contemporary installation in partnership with CBT Architects
Opening Doors is a collaborative public art installation developed by the Boston LGBTQ+ Museum of Art, History & Culture in partnership with CBT Architects and presented at CBT's Boston headquarters through September 2026.
Building upon the powerful themes of Making Space and Building Bridges, Opening Doors explores the idea that access, opportunity, and belonging are often created when individuals and institutions intentionally make room for others to thrive. Doors serve as both physical and symbolic elements of the installation—representing entry, possibility, advancement, and the courage required to step into new spaces.
At its core, the exhibition examines the many ways doors have been opened for LGBTQIA+ people in workplaces, families, communities, leadership, public policy, and society at large. It also celebrates those who have used their influence, creativity, and advocacy to open doors for others, creating pathways toward greater equity and inclusion.
Curated and led by the Boston LGBTQ+ Museum of Art, History & Culture, the installation brings together the work of local LGBTQ+ artists whose creativity reflects themes of visibility, resilience, opportunity, and collective progress. Developed in close collaboration with CBT Architects, the exhibition reflects a shared belief in the power of design, culture, and community to shape a more inclusive future.
Throughout its presentation, Opening Doors invites visitors to reflect on the opportunities that have shaped their own journeys, recognize those who have helped make those opportunities possible, and consider how they, too, can help open doors for future generations. Together, the Museum and CBT Architects hope the installation serves as both a celebration of progress and a call to action—encouraging all of us to create spaces where more people can belong, contribute, and flourish.
