America 250th

This year, we join our fellow Americans in commemorating the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, marking America’s Semiquincentennial. We hold this celebratory millstone to reaffirm our shared commitment to liberty, justice, equality, and dignity for all.

We are proud to have been able to commemorate this national milestone with a special exhibition, Vanguard of Democracy: Massachusetts and the Making of LGBTQ+ America this summer. The exhibition traced and chronicled how Massachusetts helped lead the nation in advancing LGBTQ+ civil rights—from the first openly gay and lesbian Americans elected to public office to the first legal same-sex marriages in the country. Arriving in the year of America’s 250th anniversary, Vanguard of Democracy made an intentional reminder: LGBTQ+ history is American history.
