Master Plan

Path to the Massachusetts LGBTQ+ Museum: A statewide arts and culture institution dedicated to LGBTQ+ history, artistry, and heritage.

Securing a future  permanent home: A commitment to Spatial Justice

A core priority of our work spatial justice. We define spatial justice as a responsibility to ensure that LGBTQ+ people, whose histories and contributions have been historically overlooked, have a permanent, visible, and accessible space dedicated to their history and culture. This effort responds to the longstanding absence of LGBTQ+ representation in museums, archives, and cultural institutions. By establishing a permanent home, we aim to correct this imbalance and reclaim space within the public and cultural landscape. Our goal is to affirm LGBTQ+ identity, foster a sense of belonging, and ensure that this community's stories are recognized as an integral part of the broader historical narrative.

Our main goal is to acquire a space for the museum’s permanent home. This home will house and present a permanent historical exhibition as well as galleries for rotating exhibitions across an array of disciplines.

Our first step toward this goal is to conduct a comprehensive feasibility study. We are partnering with a private firm and engaging municipal leaders, developers, and philanthropists to support this process.

The study will:

  1. Identify real estate opportunities for a larger, permanent home for the museum.

  2. Assess financial projections and capital campaign goals necessary for construction and sustainability.

  3. Explore programming and activations that merge historical stewardship, artistic excellence and creative freedom to create lasting impact.

By taking these strategic steps, we are building a museum that not only preserves and celebrates LGBTQ+ history but also strengthens the cultural and economic landscape of Massachusetts for generations to come.

In 2028, we will elvolved unto “Massachussets LGBTQ+ Museum

Statewide footprint - Building our home

As part of our long-term vision to become the leading arts and culture institution dedicated to LGBTQ+ history and artistry, the Boston LGBTQ+ Museum will formally evolve into the Massachusetts LGBTQ+ Museum in 2028. This transition will include a new name, logo, and branding, along with a statewide programming strategy and expanded cultural presence. Our goal is to ensure that the stories we tell reflect a complete and accurate portrait of Massachusetts and its LGBTQ+ communities. This next phase will align with the completion of our feasibility study, the identification of a real estate opportunity, and the launch of a capital campaign to fund the construction, retrofit, and build-out of our permanent museum space.
