The future is: Massachusetts LGBTQ+ Museum

We are building and planning to evolve into a statewide institution by 2028.

Read more about the critical and meticulous steps we are taking to build that future.

A Strategic Timeline: Toward the Massachusetts LGBTQ+ Museum
Our goal is to complete these studies by 2027, ensuring that our evolution into a statewide institution is well-informed and reflective of community needs. By 2028, as Massachusetts commemorates its 240th anniversary, we aim to officially become the Massachusetts LGBTQ+ Museum—expanding our footprint, deepening our impact, and solidifying our role as a steward of queer culture.

Community Assessment Study

We are partnering with key stakeholders to conduct a comprehensive study on LGBTQ+ arts and culture in Boston and Massachusetts.

This assessment will:

  • Identify existing cultural assets within our community.

  • Recognize the needs of LGBTQ+ artists and organizations.

  • Explore solutions to challenges LGBTQ+ creatives face in accessing funding, exhibition spaces, and public engagement.

  • Provide data-driven insights to guide future programming and institutional priorities.

Legislative Engagement: Statewide Task Force

We have formally requested that the Massachusetts Legislature establish a task force to assess the cultural and economic impact of a dedicated LGBTQ+ Museum.

This task force will:

  • Convene policymakers, cultural leaders, and economists to examine the museum’s potential influence on tourism, education, and local economies.

  • Generate insights to inform the next phase of our evolution.

  • Strengthen advocacy efforts for greater institutional support as we expand statewide.

Feasibility Study: Securing a Permanent Home

In addition to the community needs assessment and legislative efforts, we are engaging with a private firm, municipal leaders, developers, and philanthropists to conduct a feasibility study. This study will:

  • Identify real estate opportunities for a larger, permanent home for the museum.

  • Assess financial projections and capital campaign goals necessary for construction and sustainability.

  • Explore programming and activations that merge artistic excellence and creative freedom to create lasting impact.

By taking these strategic steps, we are building a museum that not only preserves and celebrates LGBTQ+ history but also strengthens the cultural and economic landscape of Massachusetts for generations to come.
