2023: Expansion and Recognition

  1. Building on the momentum we set in 2022, the Boston LGBTQ+ Museum entered a transformative year in 2023, marked by increased visibility, institutional development, and national recognition.

  2. Portraits of Pride returned for a second edition, this time illuminating Boston’s newly renovated City Hall Plaza. The installation featured influential LGBTQ+ figures, including Governor Maura Healey, the nation’s first openly gay governor, and Margaret Marshall, the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court justice who authored the landmark 2004 marriage equality decision.

  3. The museum gained national attention when Condé Nast Traveler recognized our Portraits of Pride exhibition as one of the “Best places to celebrate Pride”.

  4. We hosted a number of intimate art salons to engage community’s feedback in our mission statement, plans and envisioned programs.

  5. A major milestone in the museum’s institutional formation was securing legal representation with Latham & Watkins, a global law firm to supervise our board formation, guide our governance structure and legal counsel to oversee our legal documents.

  6. We expanded our educational initiatives, by launched Portraits of Pride Talks at the Museum of Science, to bring engaging discussions on LGBTQ+ history, activism, and culture to new audiences.

  7. In October 2023, we took a significant step forward, officially registering as a nonprofit with the Massachusetts Secretary of State and Attorney General’s Office, solidifying our commitment to build an institution that would be dedicated to preserving and amplifying LGBTQ+ history and culture.
